39They were born as the two sons of Diti, saluted by Daityas and Danavas: Hiranyakasipu the elder, and after him Hiranyaksa, the younger. 40Hiranyakasipu was killed by Hari in the form of a lion, and Hiranyaksa by him who wore the body of a boar while he lifted the earth. 41Hiranyakasipu, wanting to kill his son Prahlada, who was dear to Kesava, made many torments for him as means to his death. 42But that boy was the self of every being, at peace, looking on all alike, and touched by the fire of the Bhagavan, and for all his efforts his father could not kill him. 43Then the two were born as raksasas, the sons of Visravas by Kesini: Ravana and Kumbhakarna, who scorched all the worlds.
44There too he became the descendant of Raghu and killed them, for their release from the curse. You will hear of Rama's valour from Markandeya's own mouth, lord. 45These same two were born as kshatriyas, the sons of your mother's sister, and now they are free of the curse, their evil struck away by Krsna's disc. 46Brought into oneness with the Unfallen by a contemplation made keen by kept-up hatred, the two went back to Hari's side as attendants of Visnu. 47How did that hatred come to fall on his own dear son, who was great of soul? Tell me, revered one, how Prahlada came to be one with the Unfallen.
