39Those Nairrtas, so ordered by their master, spears in their hands, their mouths made frightful with sharp tusks, their beards and the hair of their heads copper-red, 40roaring terrible roars and calling out Cut him, split him, struck Prahlada as he sat there, with their spears, in every tender place of his body. 41His self was joined to the supreme Brahman, who cannot be pointed at, the Bhagavan, the self of all; and the blows bore no fruit, as good acts bear none for a man who has no merit. 42When that effort had been beaten off, the lord of the Daityas grew fearful, and set about making ways to kill him, doggedly, Yudhisthira.
43By the elephants of the quarters, by biting snakes, by spells and by hurling him down, by illusions and by shutting him in, by giving him poison and by giving him nothing to eat, 44by cold and wind and fire and water, and by driving mountains down on him. When the demon could not kill his son, who had done no wrong, he fell into a very long brooding and could find no way to do it.
