Quiet of mind, holding the senses in, austerity, cleanness, contentment, patience, straightness, knowledge, pity, having the Unfallen for one's self, and truth: these are the marks of a brahmin. Courage, vigour, steadiness, blaze, letting go, mastery of oneself, forbearance, kindness to brahmins, graciousness, and protection: these are the marks of a kshatriya. Devotion to the gods, to the teacher and to the Unfallen; keeping up the three ends; belief; unfailing effort; and skill: these are the marks of a vaisya. For the sudra: bowing, cleanness, serving his master without deceit, sacrifice without the formulas, not stealing, truth, and the guarding of cows and brahmins.

And for women whose husband is their god: being ready to serve him, following after his kinsmen, and always keeping the vow he keeps.
