Living in the teacher's house· Verses 1–5

The student lives in his teacher's house, holds himself in check, does what serves his teacher, and behaves toward him as a servant does, low and with a firmly settled affection. Evening and morning he should attend upon his teacher, the fire, the sun and the highest gods; and at both twilights, keeping silence, he should murmur Brahman with a gathered mind. When his teacher calls him he should recite the hymns, well held in. At the beginning and at the end he should bow his head to his teacher's feet. He should wear the girdle, the deerskin and his clothes, keep matted hair, staff and water pot, and wear the thread, with grass in his hand, as it is laid down.

Evening and morning he should go for alms and hand what he gets to his teacher. He should eat if he is given leave; if he is not, he sometimes goes without.
