30One who is set on mastering the mind should be without ties and take nothing for his own, alone, sheltering in a lonely place, a beggar who eats a measured portion of alms. 31In a clean and level place, king, he should set his seat, and sit on it steady and easy and even, his body straight, saying Om. 32He should hold in the breath going out and the breath going down, by filling, holding and letting go, until the mind gives up its desires, his gaze on the tip of his own nose. 33Wherever the mind slips out, wandering, struck by desire, from there and from there the wise man should draw it back and shut it slowly in the heart.
34For one who strives and practises in this way, the mind in a very short time goes out, unceasingly, like a fire with nothing left to burn. 35A mind unpierced by desire and the rest, with all its movements quieted, once it has touched the happiness of Brahman, never rises again.
