Those who go back to what they left· Verses 36–40

36A beggar who has gone out from home, from the field where the three are sown, and then goes back to serve them, is a man eating his own vomit, and shameless. 37Those who once held their own body to be no self, mortal, bound to end as dung or worms or ashes, and then take it for themselves and make much of it, are the worst of the untrue. 38A householder giving up his acts; a young student giving up his vow; a man of austerities living in a village; a beggar whose senses will not keep still: 39these are the outcasts of the stages of life, mockeries of them. They are confused by the god's maya, and are to be passed over with pity.
40If a man knows the self, the highest, his mind shaken clean by knowledge, then what does he want, and for whose sake, when like a lecher he feeds his body?
