47Vedic work is of two kinds, the going out and the turning back. By the going out a man comes round again; by the turning back he reaches what does not die. 48Cruel, made of things, done out of wanting, giving no peace: the fire offering and the rest, the new moon and full moon rites, the four-month rites, the animal and the soma. 49This is the sacrifice called the going out, both what is poured into the fire and what is poured beside it; and the works of merit, whose marks are temples, gardens, wells and means of living. 50The subtle ripening of what was offered, and smoke, night, the waning fortnight, the sun's southern road, the moon, the new moon, plants and creepers,
51food and seed: this, lord of the earth, is the road of the fathers, and being born again. Becoming one thing after another in order, a man is born here.
