57At the beginning of people and at their end he is what is; he is outside and inside, higher and lower, knowing and what is known, the word and what the word says, darkness and light; and he is this, himself. 58An appearance, even after it has been set aside, is still remembered as though it were a real thing. So it is with what comes through the senses, which is hard to make out and is put together out of things. 59Of these things here, earth and the rest, there is not so much as a shadow. There is no gathering of them, and no change either, nothing apart and nothing joined: it is false. 60The elements are wholes made of parts, and without the subtle elements as their parts they would not be; and if the whole is unreal, then in the end the part is unreal too.
61So long as a thing is imagined, one is taken for another; as waking and sleeping are taken for real inside a dream, so it is with what is enjoined and what is forbidden. 62Living out for himself the not-two of being, the not-two of action and the not-two of substance, the sage here shakes off the three dreams by what he has known in himself. 63Seeing that the thing which is the effect and the thing which is the cause are one, as cloth and thread are one, since the distinction is no real thing: that is called the not-two of being.
