68As you were carried, king and god, out of a crowd of hardships there was no leaving, by your own Lord; and by serving his lotus feet you conquered the elephants of the quarters and performed the sacrifices. 69Long ago I was a certain gandharva named Upabarhana, in a great age now gone, and well thought of among the gandharvas. 70Handsome in form, sweet, fragrant, pleasant to look at, always the darling of the women; but I was drunk, and a lecher about the city. 71Once, at a long sacrifice of the gods, the hosts of gandharvas and apsarases were called by the makers of the world to sing the song of Hari. 72And I, though I knew what it was for, went there singing with women around me. Seeing my slight, the makers of the world cursed me with all their force: go quickly to the state of a sudra, you who have slighted us, your splendour gone.
73Then I was born of a serving woman; and even there, by waiting on those who speak of Brahman, I came in the course of things to be a son of Brahma.
