Out of the sea as it was churned there came first a poison, huge and dreadful, called Halahala, out of a sea whose fish and sea-monsters and snakes and turtles and whales and water-elephants and crocodiles and whale-swallowers were thrown into confusion. That poison, with its fierce rush, spread out and up in quarter after quarter, above and below, not to be borne, with nothing to set against it. The creatures fled in fear, and their lords with them, unguarded, for refuge to Sadasiva. They saw that best of gods, dear to the goddess and dear to the sages, seated on the mountain for the good of the three worlds, keeping an austerity for the sake of release, and they bowed to him with praises.

God of gods, great god, self of beings, maker of beings: we have come to you for refuge. Save us from this poison that is burning the three worlds.
