The seas are your belly, the mountains the mass of your bones, the herbs and creepers your body hair; the metres, plainly, are your seven elements; and all dharma is your heart, self made of the triple Veda. Your five faces are the Upanisads, Lord, from which comes the class of thirty-eight mantras; and that reality of the supreme Self which is called Siva, shining of itself, god, is where you stand. Your shadow lies on the waves of wrongdoing, out of which comes the sending forth; your three eyes are clarity and passion and darkness; your look is the making of the treatises for the self of enumeration; god, you are the ancient sage made of the metres.

Guardian of the mountain, that highest light of yours is not to be come at by all the guardians of the worlds, nor by Virinca, nor by him whom nothing hinders, nor by the lord of the gods: where there is no passion and no darkness and no clarity, that Brahman in which all division is thrown out. You destroy Kama, the sacrifice, the three cities, the poison of time, and many another that harms living things; but that is nothing to praise you for, since at the end of time you do not even notice this world, your own making, burnt to ash by one flame from a spark of the fire in your eye.
