Having spoken so to Bhavani, the revered one, the maker of the world, set about the eating of that poison; and she, who knew his power, agreed to it. Then the great god, the maker of beings, took the spreading Halahala poison into the palm of his hand and ate it, out of pity. And to him too that filth of the water showed its own strength: it turned his throat blue, and that became an ornament upon the good one. Good people are for the most part burnt by the burning of the world; and that is the highest worship of the Person, the self of all. Hearing of that act of Sambhu's, the god of gods, the open-handed one, the creatures and the daughter of Daksa and Brahma and him whom nothing hinders spoke well of it.

Whatever spilled from his hand as he drank, the scorpions and the snakes and the poisonous plants and the other biting things took that for themselves.
