1The demons had thrown friendship aside and were snatching the vessel from one another, jeering, behaving like robbers, when they saw a woman coming toward them. 2What beauty! What splendour! What fresh youth she has! So they said, and with longing risen in their hearts they ran up to her and asked her: 3Who are you, whose eyes are lotus petals? Where do you come from, and what do you mean to do? Whose are you? Tell us, you of the lovely thighs: you seem to be churning our minds. 4We do not know you to have been touched before by gods, by Daityas, by the perfected or the gandharvas or the caranas, nor by the guardians of the worlds. How then by men?
5Surely, fair-browed one, you have been sent by the Ordainer, and out of some kindness, to make the delight of every sense and of the mind for those who wear bodies. Is it not so? 6Proud one, we are kinsmen contending over one thing, and our enmity is knotted fast. Slender one, make peace among us. 7We are Kasyapa's heirs, brothers, and each of us has done his part. Divide it as is right, so that no split comes of it.
