Bhagavan said: Brahma, the one to whom I show grace, from him I shake his riches loose, since it is drunk on them that a man goes stiff and thinks little of the world and of me. When at some time or other this living self, going round through many wombs by works that are its own, having no power over it, comes to the state of a man, and if there is then no stiffening in him from birth, from works, from youth, from beauty, from learning, from lordship, from wealth and the rest, that is my grace upon him. Birth and the rest are on every side the ground of pride and stiffening, and they run against everything that is good; but one who has me for his highest is not bewildered by them.

This one, first among the Danavas and Daityas and the increaser of their fame, has beaten the maya that is not to be beaten. Sinking, he is not bewildered. His wealth gone, fallen from his place, thrown down and bound by enemies, given up by his own kin, driven on through torment, scolded by his teacher and cursed, he did not let go of the truth, firm in his vow. Dharma was spoken to him by me with tricks inside it, and this man, whose word is true, does not let it go. He has been brought by me to a place hard for the undying ones themselves to reach. In the age of Savarni he will be Indra, with me for his shelter.
