13Before that, when Manu had no child, the revered Vasistha, they say, that master, made an offering to Mitra and Varuna for the sake of offspring. 14There Sraddha, Manu's wife, came up to the hotr priest and bowed to him, and keeping the vow of living on milk she asked him for a daughter. 15Sent forward by the adhvaryu, the hotr, holding that in his mind and well gathered, moved in the offering with it, the twice-born reciting the call vasat. 16By that straying of the hotr a daughter came, and her name was Ila. Seeing her, Manu, not much gladdened in mind, said to the teacher: 17Revered one, what has come of this? Your rite, and you the ones who speak of Brahman, and it has turned about. Oh, this is a hard thing. Let there be no such going wrong of the holy word.
18You know Brahman, you are joined to your discipline, your wrongs burned away by austerity. How then this unevenness between what was intended and what came, an untruth, as though among the gods?
