18Then Saryati, meaning to perform a sacrifice, went to Cyavana's hermitage, and saw at his daughter's side a man shining like the sun. 19The king spoke to his daughter, who had bowed down at his feet, and he did not pronounce the blessings over her, and looked like a man not much pleased. 20What is it you mean to do? Your husband, a sage to whom the world bows, has been cheated by you. You, faithless woman, have left one eaten by old age and not held in honour, and you wait upon this lover, this man off the road. 21How has your mind gone so far from what good people understand? You were born in a family, and this is the defiling of a family: that you keep a lover shamelessly, and drag your father's line and your husband's down into the dark.
22To her father, speaking so, she said, smiling, her smile a clean one: Father, this is your son-in-law, the joy of Bhrgu's line. 23She told her father the whole of it, how the youth and the beauty had been got. Amazed and full of delight, he took his daughter in his arms.
