34The hundred-willed one and the others sang his doings with delight as he went. Then he heard that his brother was living on barley boiled in cow's urine and wearing bark for clothing, 35with his hair matted, lying on the bare ground; and, being greatly compassionate, he was pained at it. Bharata, hearing that he had come, with the townspeople and the ministers and the priests, 36set the sandals on his own head and went out from his camp at Nandigrama to meet Rama, his elder brother, with the sound of singing and of instruments, 37and with the roar of Brahman raised again and again by the reciters of the Veda, with banners of gold cloth, with golden chariots bright with flags,
38with good horses in gold harness, with foot-soldiers in golden mail, with the guilds, with the chief women of the town, and with servants walking behind, 39bringing the best things there were and goods of every sort, high and low. And he fell at his brother's feet in love, his heart and his eyes soaked through. 40He set the sandals down in front of him and stood with hands joined and tears in his eyes; and Rama held him a long while in both arms and washed him in the water of his eyes.
