One day, when Rama had gone from the hermitage into the forest with his brothers, they came, wanting to have their enmity out, having got their opening at last. Seeing the sage sitting in the fire-house with his mind entered wholly into the Bhagavan whose renown is highest, those men, set on their sin, killed him. Rama's mother begged them piteously, but those kshatriyas in name only, past all cruelty, forced the head from him and carried it away. Renuka, struck through with pain and grief, beating herself with her own hands, that true woman cried out aloud again and again: Rama, Rama! My son! They were far off and heard that cry of hers, Ah Rama, in the voice of one in pain. They came quickly to the hermitage and saw their father killed.

The rush of pain and rage and fury and hurt and grief took away their senses. Ah father, good man, upright above all, you have left us and gone to heaven.
