Of Gadhi was born a man of great fire, like a flame kindled up, who by austerity let go of what belongs to a kshatriya and gained the splendour of Brahman. And Visvamitra had a hundred sons and one, king. The middle of them was Madhucchandas, and after him they are all called the Madhucchandases. He made Sunahsepa, the son of Ajigarta, his own son, the Bhargava who is also Devarata, and said to his sons: Let this one be set down as the eldest. He was the one sold as a human beast at Hariscandra's sacrifice, who praised the gods with the lord of creatures at their head, and was let go from the binding of the rope.

He was given by the gods at the god-sacrifice among the people of Gadhi, an ascetic; and so he is known as Devarata, that Sunahsepa, the Bhargava.
