Those of the Madhucchandases who were older did not think that a good thing; and the sage in his anger cursed them: Become outsiders to us all, you bad men. Then Madhucchandas, with fifty of the brothers, said: In whatever you settle on for us, in that we take our stand. They made the seer of the mantra their eldest: We come after you. And Visvamitra said to his sons: You will have heroes for sons, you who by taking up my honour have made me a man with heroes about him. This Devarata is your hero, sons of Kusika. Follow him. And there are the others too, Astaka and Harita and Jaya and Kratumat and the rest. So through the Visvamitras the Kausika line came to be of many kinds and to hold different ranks within itself; and it was settled in just this way.
