We are those by whose austerity this was brought forth, we who are the mouth of the supreme Person, by whom the light is held up here, by whom the road that is kind has been shown. It is to us that the lords of the worlds and the rulers of the gods bow and give their attendance, and the Bhagavan too, the self of all, who makes clean, in whom Sri has her house. And among them we are the Bhrgus; and her father, the demon, is our pupil. This untrue woman has put on what is ours to wear, as a sudra takes up the Veda. Sarmistha, reviled like this, spoke to the teacher's daughter, breathing hard with rage like a she-snake trodden on, her lip caught in her teeth.

You do not know your own condition, and you boast a great deal, beggar-woman. Do you not wait at our houses, the way crows wait for the food that is set out? Having thrown such hard words at the true daughter of the teacher, Sarmistha in her fury took her dress from her and threw her into a well.
