One day the daughter of the lord of the Danavas, a girl named Sarmistha, a spirited woman, with a thousand friends and with the teacher's daughter as well, walked with Devayani in the garden outside the city, thick with trees in flower, on the sand beside a lotus pool where the bees were singing sweetly. Coming to the water, those lotus-eyed girls left their fine clothes on the bank and played there, splashing one another. Seeing the mountain-dweller going by on his bull with the goddess, the women came out of the water all at once and put their clothes on, ashamed. Sarmistha, not knowing whose it was, put on the dress of the teacher's daughter. Devayani took it for her own, and said this in anger:

Look now at this serving woman's doing, and how out of place it is. She has put on what is ours to wear, as a bitch takes the offering at a sacrifice.
