Dusmanta went out after game and came to the ground of Kanva's hermitage. She was sitting there, making the place beautiful with a light of her own, like Fortune herself. At the sight of her he was bewildered on the instant, as by a woman who was the gods' own maya; and with a few soldiers about him he spoke to that fair one. Gladdened by the sight of her, his weariness gone from him, burning with desire, he asked her, laughing, in a smooth voice. Who are you, whose eyes are lotus petals? Whose are you, you who go straight to the heart? And what is it you mean to do here in an empty forest? It is plain to me, slender-waisted one, that you are a kshatriya's daughter. The mind of those of Puru's line never takes pleasure in wrongdoing.

I am Visvamitra's daughter, and Menaka left me in the forest. The revered Kanva knows all of this. Hero, what shall I do for you?
