56Whenever, here, dharma wastes away and wrongdoing grows, then the Bhagavan, the Lord, Hari, sends himself forth. 57There is no cause of his birth or of his acting, lord of the earth, except his own maya; for he is the Lord, the supreme, the one who watches, the self. 58What the Person does by maya is for the making, the keeping and the unmaking of things. His favour is held to be for the ending of that, and for the finding of the self. 59The earth was being trampled by demons who commanded whole armies and wore the marks of kings, and he set himself to work to take the weight off her. 60Together with Sankarsana, the Bhagavan, the slayer of Madhu, did deeds that the lords of the gods cannot measure even in thought.
61For the sake of those who would be born in the Kali age, and to favour those devoted to him, he spread out a fame of great merit that drives off pain and grief and darkness, 62a fame that is nectar for good ears, the best of all fords. A man who cups his ears and touches that water once shakes off the leaning his works have laid in him.
