The cattle camp had its gateways and courtyards and the insides of its houses swept and sprinkled, and arches hung with bright banners and flags and garlands, with cloth and with young leaves. The cows, the bulls and the young calves were rubbed with turmeric and oil, and hung with bright ore and peacock feathers and garlands, with cloth and with chains of gold. The cowherds came, king, in costly clothes and ornaments and jackets and turbans, with all sorts of gifts in their hands. And the cowherd women, delighted to hear of the birth of a son to Yasoda, made themselves fine with clothes and ornaments and eye-black and the rest.

Their lotus faces bright with fresh saffron and its threads, broad at the hip, their breasts moving as they went, they hurried off with their offerings. The cowherd women, with well-polished jewelled earrings and gold discs at their throats, in bright clothes, showering the road with the flowers that fell from their braids, bangled, walking to Nanda's house, shone with their swinging earrings and their necklaces on their breasts. Calling down blessings on the child, long may you guard, they sprinkled the Unborn with turmeric powder and oil and water, and sang out.
