19Having set the cowherds to guard the cow settlement, Nanda went to Mathura to give Kamsa his yearly tax, best of the Kurus. 20Vasudeva, hearing that his brother Nanda had come, and knowing the tax had been given to the king, went to where he was lodged. 21Seeing him, he rose at once, as a body rises when the breath comes back into it; glad, overcome with love, he took the dearest of men in his two arms and held him. 22Honoured, seated at ease, asked after his health with respect, his mind held fast by his own two sons, he said this, lord of men. 23It is our fortune, brother, that a child has come to you now, when you are old and had none, and had given up hoping for one.
24It is our fortune that we have found each other today, turning as we are in this wheel of the round of birth and born again. The sight of one we love is hard to come by. 25Friends whose work takes them each his own way do not live together in one place, any more than floating things do that a stream is carrying apart.
