For a worthless man blinded by the pride of wealth, poverty is the best salve for the eyes. A poor man looks at other beings by the likeness of himself. As a man whose body a thorn has pierced does not want that pain for any other creature, having come by such signs to feel that life is one and the same, so a man no thorn has pierced does not. A poor man here, with no stiff sense of I, released from every kind of pride, takes the hardship that comes to him as it comes; and that is his highest austerity. The senses of a poor man dry up, whose body is always thin with hunger and who wants food; and the harm he does falls away as well.

It is with the poor man alone that the good keep company, who look upon all alike. Through the good he wears that thirst of his away, and from then on he is soon made clean. What have the good to do with such men, even-minded as they are and seeking Mukunda's feet, when those men are stiff with wealth, worthless, resting on what is worthless, and fit only to be passed by?
