One day, with five or six nights left to fill out the year, the unborn one went into the wood with Rama, pasturing the calves. Then the cows, grazing on the top of Govardhana hill, caught sight of the calves feeding far below, near Vraja, and left the grass. Seeing them, that herd of cows was carried away by love and forgot itself. Leaving their keepers behind on a way too rough for them, they came on two legs, humps and necks and faces and tails lifted, lowing, their milk running, at a run. Coming up, the cows let the calves under them and gave them the milk of their own udders, though they had young of their own; and they licked their bodies as though they would swallow them.

The cowherds were full of anger and shame at the useless work of holding them back, and coming up with difficulty by the rough road they saw their own sons there among the calves. At the sight of them their hearts were flooded with the taste of rising love. Affection came up in them, their anger went, and lifting the children in their arms they held them and smelled their heads and came to the highest joy. Then the older cowherds, made happy through and through by the embrace of their little ones, went away slowly and with difficulty, their eyes running as they remembered them.
