Sometimes the two of them took the cowherds by the hand as they danced or sang or leapt or wrestled with each other, and laughed, and praised them. Sometimes he lies down on a bed of young leaves at the root of a tree, worn thin with the labour of wrestling, with a cowherd's lap for a pillow. Some of them rubbed the great one's feet, and others, whose wrongs had been struck away, fanned him with fans. Others sang for the great one songs that suited him and were sweet to hear, great king, slowly, their minds wet with love. So, hiding the way of his own self by his own maya and playing at being a cowherd's son in all he did, he whose feet, tender as new leaves, are cared for by Fortune took his pleasure among country people like a countryman, though what he did was a lord's.
