Mighty one, you should not say so hard a thing. Make your own word true. We have come to the soles of your feet, going past all our kin, to carry on our hair the tulasi garland dropped from them. Our husbands will not take us back, nor our parents or sons, nor brothers or kinsmen or friends, and others still less. So for us, whose selves have fallen at the tips of your feet, there is no other way. Tamer of enemies, see to it. Bhagavan said: Your husbands will not find fault with you, nor your fathers, brothers, sons and the rest, nor the people — I have gone to them for you — and even the gods agree. The touch of a body does not make for gladness or for love among men here. Join your minds to me, and you will come to me before long.

Told this, those wives of the sages went back to the sacrificial ground; and the men, holding nothing against them, finished the session with their own wives. There one of them, held back by her husband, took the Bhagavan into her heart as she had heard of him, and let go of the body that bound her to her works.
