Verse 19

¹⁶Some love in return those who love them; some do the opposite; and some love neither of the two. Sir, explain this to us properly. ¹⁷Bhagavan said: Friends, those who love one another in return are working only for their own sake. There is no friendship in that, and no dharma: it is for their own sake and nothing else. ¹⁸Those who love those who do not love them, out of tenderness, as parents do: in them, slender-waisted ones, there is dharma with nothing to be said against it, and there is friendship. ¹⁹Some do not love even those who love them, let alone those who do not: those who take their pleasure in the self, those whose wants are already met, the ungrateful, and those who do harm to their teachers.
