5Some great snake in that wood, very hungry, came upon them as chance had it, and the serpent began to swallow Nanda where he lay asleep. 6Caught in the snake he cried out: Krsna, Krsna! This great serpent is swallowing me, my son. I have come to you; let me go free. 7Hearing his cry the cowherds got up all at once, and when they saw him being swallowed they lost their heads and struck at the snake with firebrands. 8Though the brands were burning it, the serpent would not let him go; and the Bhagavan, the lord of the Satvatas, came up and touched it with his foot. 9His evil struck away by the touch of the Bhagavan's beautiful foot, he left the body of the snake and took a form such as the vidyadharas honour.
