On the road, king, the village people gathered here and there, and looking at the two sons of Vasudeva they were glad, and could not take their eyes away. By then the people of Vraja, Nanda the cowherd and the rest, who had gone on ahead, had reached the grove outside the city and were standing there waiting. The Bhagavan, lord of the world, came up to them and spoke to Akrura, taking his hand in his own hand, half smiling at the man's deference: You go on into the city ahead of us with the chariot, to your house. We will get down here, and then we will look at the city. I will not enter Mathura without you two, my lord. You should not leave me, master. I am one of yours, and you are tender to those devoted to you.

Come, let us go to our house, and give it a master, you who are beyond the reach of the senses, with your elder brother, with the cowherds and with your friends, best of friends. Make our houses clean with the dust of your feet, ours who keep the household fires. By that cleansing the fathers are satisfied, and the gods along with the fires.
