Then in the afternoon Krsna the Bhagavan, with Sankarsana, ringed about by the cowherds, entered Mathura, wanting to see it. He saw the city: high gate-towers of crystal over its doorways, great archways with doors of gold, storerooms of copper and brass, hard to come at across its moat, made lovely with pleasure gardens and groves, furnished with golden crossings and mansions and inner courts, with guild halls and dwelling houses; and on the eaves and the terraces, cat's-eye and diamond and clear sapphire and coral, pearls and emeralds, set into the lattices and the openings and the paved floors; loud with the doves and peacocks that had settled there; its streets and market roads and squares sprinkled with water and strewn with garlands and shoots and parched grain and rice,

its doorways and houses well decked with full jars smeared with curd and sandal, with rows of flowers and lamps and fresh leaves, with clusters of plantain and betel palm, with banners and with strips of cloth.
