As the two sons of Vasudeva came into it along the royal road, surrounded by their friends, the women of the city hurried out to look, and climbed up on the mansions, king, eager for the sight of them. Some had put their clothes and their ornaments on the wrong way round; some had forgotten one of a pair; some had a leaf drawn on one ear only, or one anklet on; and some had painted one eye and not the other. Some were eating and pushed it aside in their gladness; some were being rubbed with oil and never finished their bath; some got up out of sleep when they heard the sound; and mothers left off giving the breast to a child.

The lotus-eyed one carried off their minds with bold, playing, smiling glances, striding like a rutting bull elephant, and gave to their eyes a festival made out of himself, the lover of Sri. They had heard of him again and again and their hearts had run out to him. Now, seeing him, they were honoured by the nectar his look and his open smile sprinkled on them. They took that shape of gladness into their arms with their eyes, held him inside themselves, their skin thrilled, and they let go of an ache that had no end, tamer of foes.
