Then, scorcher of foes, Krsna and Rama, having washed themselves clean, heard the sound of the wrestlers' drums and came to see. Reaching the door of the arena, Krsna saw the elephant Kuvalayapida standing there, driven on by its keeper. Tightening his belt and gathering up his curling hair, the son of Sura spoke to the elephant keeper in a voice as deep as thunder in a cloud: Keeper, keeper, give us the road, get out of the way, and be quick. If you will not, I will send you to Yama's house today, and your elephant with you. Threatened like this, the keeper grew angry and drove the angered elephant at Krsna, an elephant like Yama the ender at the end of time.

The great elephant rushed at him and seized him hard with its trunk. He slipped out of the trunk, struck the beast, and vanished between its legs. Enraged, and unable to see him, it hunted with its nose and caught Kesava with the tip of its trunk; and he pulled himself out of it by force.
