These two, surely, are a portion of the Bhagavan Hari Narayana himself, come down here in the house of Vasudeva. This one was born of Devaki, they say, and carried to Gokula; and he has lived hidden all this time and grown up in Nanda's house. Putana was brought to her end by him, and the Danava in the whirlwind, and the two arjuna trees, and the guhyaka, and Kesin, and Dhenuka, and others of that kind. By him the cows and their keepers were freed from the forest fire; the snake Kaliya was tamed, and Indra was taken down out of his pride. For seven days he held the best of mountains up with one hand, and Gokula was saved from the rain and the wind and the lightning.

The cowherd women, looking at that face of his with its always glad smile and its glance, cross their many burnings gladly and without labour. They say that this widely known line of Yadu will get good fortune and fame and greatness through him, kept safe by him. And this is his elder brother, the fortunate Rama with lotus eyes, by whom Pralamba was killed, and Vatsaka, and Baka and the rest.
