Hearing this, the son of Damaghosa rose from his seat, anger born in him at the telling of Krsna's qualities. He threw up his arm, and there in the assembly, unable to bear it and afraid of nothing, he said these harsh things for the Bhagavan to hear. The scripture that says time is the Lord and cannot be got past speaks true, since the understanding even of old men can be split apart by the words of a boy. You are the best of those who know who is a fit vessel. Do not go by a boy's talk, by which Krsna is made the one approved for the honour. You are all lords of this assembly. Passing over the highest sages, who hold to austerity and learning and vows, whose stain is destroyed by knowledge, who stand in Brahman and are honoured by the guardians of the worlds,

passing over the lords of the assembly, how does a cowherd, a stain on his family, deserve the honour, any more than a crow deserves the offering cake? He is outside class and stage and family, put out of all dharma, going about as he pleases, with no good qualities in him. How does he deserve the honour? Their family was cursed by Yayati and put out by the good, and it is for ever given to drinking for nothing. How does he deserve the honour? These men left the countries where the sages of Brahman live, and with no brightness of Brahman in them took to the sea, a hard place to come at, and from there they harry the people like robbers.
