Bhagavan said: Brahmin, when you came home from the teacher's house, having given him his fee, did you take a wife who suits you, or not, you who know dharma? Your mind is mostly on your household, but it was not desire that put it there, and you take no great pleasure in wealth, learned man. I know that well. Some do their work with minds untouched by wanting, letting go the natures the gods have set in them, as I do, for the holding together of the world. Brahmin, do you remember our living in the teacher's house? It is from there that a twice-born man, knowing what is to be known, reaches the far shore of the dark.

He is truly the source here of a twice-born man's good works, dear one, and first among those in the stages of life: a teacher who gives knowledge, as I do. Brahmin, those among people in their classes and stages who understand what things are for cross the sea of becoming easily, by the word of me who am their teacher. I am not so well pleased by sacrifice, or by the second birth, or by austerity, or by quietness, I who am the self of all beings, as I am by service done to a teacher.
