What, brahmin? Is there no bearer of a bow here in the place where you live? A kshatriya in name only; and these brahmins sit at their session. Where the brahmins grieve, parted from wealth and wives and children, there the men in a kshatriya's dress are actors, living to fill their bellies. Revered one, I shall guard the children of you two here, who are wretched; and if I do not carry out what I have promised, I shall enter the fire and have my wrong burnt away. Sankarsana, Vasudeva, Pradyumna the best of bowmen, Aniruddha to whom no chariot is a match: since they were not able to save them, how then do you mean to do a deed that the lords of the world cannot do? It is childishness, and we do not put our trust in it.

I am not Sankarsana, brahmin, nor Krsna, nor Krsna's son. I am the one named Arjuna, whose bow is Gandiva. Do not make light of my strength, brahmin, which once pleased the three-eyed one. I shall conquer death in battle and bring your children back to you, lord.
