Let the sage swallow his mouthful a little at a time, only so much as the body may live on, and beg from house to house as the bee does, harming none of them. From small books and from great ones a skilled man should take the essence out of everything, as the bee takes it from flowers. He should not lay by what he has begged for the evening or for tomorrow. His hand is his bowl and his belly his vessel; he should not be a hoarder, as the bee is. A begging man should not lay by what he has begged for the evening or for tomorrow. Gathering as the bee gathers, he is destroyed along with what he gathered.
