28Hear from me the song of that woman whose mind had turned away. Turning away is a sword to a man for the cords of his hoping. 29Dear one, a man in whom no turning away has been born does not wish to leave the body's bondage, just as a man without understanding does not wish to leave off saying mine, king. 30Look at the reach of my delusion, and how little I have mastered myself! Fool that I am, I want pleasure from a lover who is not real. 31There is one close beside me who delights me, who gives pleasure and gives wealth and is always here; and leaving him, in my ignorance, I have served what is worthless and gives nothing I want, but gives sorrow, fear, distress, grief and delusion.
32How I have tormented myself for nothing by this trade of appointments, this most contemptible business, wanting money and pleasure with a self that was bought, from a man ruled by women, thirsty for gain, a man to be pitied! 33This house, its beams and rafters made of bones, covered over with skin and hair and nails, leaking at its nine doors, filled with dung and urine: what woman but me would go to it? 34In this city of the Videhas I alone am the fool, wanting another, who is not real, in place of the Unfallen, who gives himself and gives what one wants.
