Holding on, and the osprey· Verses 1–4

1Taking things to hold is a cause of sorrow to men, whatever is dearest to them. The man who knows this and owns nothing comes upon a happiness without end. 2Strong ones who had no meat set upon the osprey that had meat. When it let that meat go, it found happiness. 3For me there is no honour and no slight, and none of the worry of men with houses and sons. Playing in the self and delighting in the self, I go about here like a child. 4Two only are free of worry and steeped in the highest bliss: the one who is bewildered and dull, a child, and the one who has gone beyond the strands.
