By those natures beings are made different from one another, and so are the lords of beings; and according to the nature of each, their speech flows out in its many colours. So by the many kinds of nature the minds of men are made different. Some go by what has been handed down, and others hold to views outside that line. Bull among men, men whose thinking is bewildered by my maya speak of the highest good in a hundred ways, each according to his own work and his own liking. Some say it is dharma, others fame, or desire, or truth, or self-command, or quiet; others say it is one's own gain, or lordship, or giving up, or eating; and some say sacrifice, austerity, giving, vows, observances, restraints.

All the worlds these win are made by works and have a beginning and an end. They turn out in sorrow, they come to rest in darkness, their gladness is a small thing, and they are given over to grief.
