As gold blown in the fire leaves its dross and takes its own form again, so the self shakes off what its works have left lying in it and comes then to me by the yoga of devotion to me. The more this self is rubbed clean by the hearing and the telling of the good stories about me, the more it sees the subtle thing, as an eye sees when the salve has been put on it. The mind of a man who dwells on things sticks fast in those things; the mind of a man who keeps remembering me melts away into me alone. So let go the dwelling on what is not real, as you would a dream or a daydream, and set your mind, made ready by feeling for me, steadily upon me.

Leaving far behind the company of women and of men who keep company with women, let a man who holds himself in hand sit in a safe and lonely place and think of me, never slack. No clinging to anything else brings a man such distress and such bondage as clinging to a woman does, or keeping company with men who cling to them.
