Bhagavan said: One who wants to enter the forest should leave his wife with his sons, or else take her with him, and live in the forest itself, at peace, for the third part of his life. He should make his living from bulbs and roots and fruits of the forest that are fit for offering. He should wear bark for a garment, and grass, leaves and deerskins. He should let the hair of his head and body, his nails, his beard, his dirt and his teeth stay as they are, and not scrub them. He should dip in water three times a day and lie on the bare ground. In the hot season he should heat himself among the five fires; in the rains stand out under the downpour; in the cold stand sunk to the neck in water. Behaving so, he should carry his austerity through.

He should eat what fire has cooked, or else what time has ripened, pounding it with mortar and stone, or with his teeth for a mortar. He should gather for himself everything that makes his living, knowing the place, the season and his own strength. He should not use what was brought in at another time.
