The mind turns the wheel· Verses 43–47

These people are not the cause of my pleasure and pain, nor a god, nor the self, nor the planets, works or time. The mind, they hand down, is the higher cause, which keeps the wheel of the round of birth turning. The mind, being the stronger, brings the strands to birth, and out of them works of unlike kinds: white ones, black ones, and red ones. From these come courses that match them in colour. The self does nothing. While the mind strives, the one made of gold, my friend, looks on from above. Taking hold of the mind, which is his own mark, and tasting what he wants, he is bound, held fast in the strands. Giving, one's own duty, the restraints and the rules, what is heard, works, and good vows: all of them end in the mark of holding the mind in. The higher yoga is the settling of the mind.

For one whose mind is settled and quiet, tell me, what is there left to do with giving and the rest? And if the mind is unchecked and being lost, what more do these do?
