Atri

Atri was born from the eye of Brahmā, the creator, and his family are the seers of the fifth book of the Ṛgveda, the Veda of sacred hymns: the hymns of that book are theirs. The hymns remember him lowered into a burning pit and brought out unharmed by the Aśvins, and remember that when a demon hid the Sun in darkness, it was Atri who found it again and set the eye of the Sun back in the sky. He stood on one foot for a hundred years on Mount Ṛkṣa, and the three lords of the gods, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, came to him together; from their portions were born his three sons, Soma, Datta and Durvāsa. He praised King Vainya to his face and was proved right, and he received Rāma, the prince of Ayodhyā, with his wife Sītā and his brother Lakṣmaṇa, in his hermitage as a father receives a son.
