Sri Sai Das Babaji
c. 1940 to September 2006
He taught in short sentences meant to be carried home rather than studied. Sai Foundation gathered a hundred and fifty-one of them into a collection, and all of them are here, by theme. Read one, and stay with it a while before the next.
God in All Things
There is no form of truth. There is no colour of truth. There is no smell of truth. There is no boundary of truth. There is no time of truth because the only truth is God.
Nature speaks to man in the Divine language of God, through clouds and colours, rains and snowfalls, seasons and weathers, meadows and brooks, valleys and pastures, hills and hillocks, trees and flowers, birds and bees.
God is seen every moment in the shyness of a child, in the colour of a violet, in the laughter of a stream, in the curiosity of a cat, in the imagination of a poet, in the energy of an atom, in the enthusiasm of a sportsman, in the joy of a mother, in the beauty of a rose, in the innocence of a dove and in the song of a bird.
If an ecstatic vision so sublime, so beautiful, can always linger in your mind for ever, then be sure THAT IT IS GOD'S VISION.
Love
We would have been the poorest of the poor had SAI not enkindled in us a spark of Divine Love for HIM.
Faith and Surrender
Your FAITH in SAI is your religion. First of all it liberates you from the chains of petty thoughts, jealousies, hatreds, prejudices, anger, selfishness, attachment, desires and ultimately from the cycle of birth and death.
The concept of faith comes from your mental attitude. The more generous it is, the deeper is your faith.
Your spiritual FAITH in SAI is the perennial source of strength for sacrifice and sympathy, courage and conviction, happiness and harmony, work and worship, duty and devotion, peace and prayer.
It is only religion and your faith in God, which will direct the course of your action in your day-to-day life and will determine your future.
In the absence of religious faith, there can be no morality. In the absence of morality there can be no peace. In the absence of peace there can be no harmony. In the absence of harmony there can be no religious faith. It is a cycle which one has to know.
Prayer and Remembrance
Prayer is nothing but sublimation of your penance. The more earnest you are in your prayer, the easier shed are your sins.
All finer feelings spring from the heart; your concern for your brothers and your love for God. Make your heart a HOLY ABODE OF SAI by constantly remembering HIM.
The great advantage of praying to SAI every day can be felt in the strength of a noble character in you.
May Sai always grant us the calmness of the hills, the soothing music of streams, the loftiness of an oak, the humbleness of grass, the vastness of the sky, the seriousness of the ocean, the strength of mountains, the purity of snow, the gentleness of the wind, the warmth of sunshine, the determination of rocks and the patience of a spider.
Service
Those who are destined to live in ignorance, illiteracy, squalor and poverty, are more to be pitied than to be blamed. They are our brothers and sisters. We serve God if we serve them.
SAI is very kind. When you give a thing to the poor. He returns it multiplied for He knows that sacrifice is also a form of prayer.
A purposeless life lived for a century is a sheer waste. A life lived for an hour in the service of God and in the service of the needy and the poor, is a life time gain.
Kindness and Forgiveness
Kindness, compassion and help have their own language. They speak through the eyes in mute words of the heart.
The Mind and Conscience
The mind is in itself and at its own place but can make you wander aimlessly all over the globe if you have not learned how to control it and how to direct it on to the path of righteousness.
Every thought is not the mind but what is mind is the place where thought is churned into an idea by analytical thinking and a well acted life.
Many people have a wrong notion that they are thinking; while in reality, they are found rearranging their grievances, jealousies and hatred.
Your conscience is your guide; it will always give you the right direction when you need it in your hour of chaos and confusion.
The weight of sin lies heavier on the conscience than it does on the hearts of those who, while committing sin, do not think of God for if they do, they will commit no sin.
Those who have controlled their senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing, their soul is purified. God will grant them peace and liberation.
Strive hard to learn the discipline of mind, the discipline of heart, the discipline of language, the discipline of senses. SAI loves those who have disciplined their lives.
The hardest thing in life is to mould and discipline one's thinking and thereby to discipline one's character.
Be always alert, attentive, conscious, careful, watchful and awake; then only you can sharpen the tools of your wisdom.
Speech and Silence
Anger, Greed and Ego
When anger pours its words of fire, wisdom hides her face like a liar; peace and patience flee like a hare, crime and cruelty take their share.
Dhritrashtra was born blind but Duryodhana was blinded by greed, anger and ego which ultimately destroyed him.
A man possessing demonic tendencies will work against the glory of God and will bring shame, ruin and destruction to himself and to humanity.
Character
The finest qualities in our character come from being vigilant every moment about our words and actions.
Simplicity and Happiness
Happiness is there in the chirping of birds, in looking at a flower, in listening to a song, and in holding hands together, provided your heart is receiving the message.
To get true happiness, eat simple food, wear simple clothes., live with simple habits and be simple in your dealings. Avoid selfishness, avoid self pity, avoid self seeking, avoid taking debt, avoid taking favours. Think clearly, plan accurately, concentrate prudently and act wisely. Cultivate hobbies, work with devotion, serve all, love all and remember God constantly.
Effort, Adversity and Hope
SUCCESS is not measured in terms of achievement, but in long and arduous struggle in reaching the goal and looking a step ahead.
You can never have a closer look at life unless adversity has taught you the VALUE OF MONEY and the VALUE OF TIME.
Ninety five percent of our misfortunes are self created. If we walk the straight path of hard work and honesty, sincerity and simplicity, duty and devotion in our work, worship and worldly affairs, GOD will free us from all ills.
Hope is a miraculous thing which keeps the excitement in our activities for a better tomorrow. Hope is a priceless gem which keeps every one alive.
There are always opportunities for an optimistic man; It is the lazy and the fatalistic who cannot grasp them.
Idleness is a curse. Don't waste time. Awake, arise and work hard SAI will help you in your mission.
Not every one is born great but if you have ambition to be great, then talk less, pray more and work hard to achieve what you want.
Your unflinching faith in three things will certainly make you great: your LOVE FOR GOD, your love for education and your LOVE FOR HARD WORK.
Your love for education, hard work and God with dedication, discipline and determination can do miracles in your life.
Man can become the maker of his fate if only he knows how to love hard work and how to work hard to get HIS love.
The GOAL is not far if you be good, do good, be kind, be pardoning, be free from desires, in your words and actions.
If you practice humility, purity, charity, generosity, sincerity, adaptability, simplicity and regularity, be sure you have achieved that eternity and immorality. Remember that GOD IS THE ONLY ENTITY.
Home and Friendship
A home is a place where we are sure of each other; sure of tenderness, sharing and caring, love and affection, concern and protection, confidence and courage, hopes and happiness. A home is a place where prayers are sung together, bread is shared lovingly and where a guest doesn't go unfed.
A home is a temple, a home is a school; a home is a hospital; a home is a garden. We become what our mother teaches us of the values of these institutions.
A home is not built by walls and roofs; it is built by love, kindness, care, help, tolerance and sacrifice. The more you can afford, the more lasting it will be.
The happiness of a home is harmony, the strength of a home is sacrifice, the spirit of a home is service, the wealth of a home is worship, the duty of a home is devotion, the prayer of a home is peace, the might of a home is meekness, the faith of a home is forgiveness. The security of a home is sweetness, the purity of a home is patience, the comfort of a home is compassion, the courage of a home is conviction, the heroism of a home is humility, the fearlessness of a home is cheerfulness. The greatness of a home is goodness. The family from such a home has God's blessings.
It is not our hatred as much as our indifference which destroys the very fabric of human relationship.
Children and the Young
God's kindness can be seen on children's innocent faces. They need parents' care, cheer, tolerance and constant love to grow healthy in mind and body.
To me a CHILD'S FACE smeared with gum and glue, dirt and jelly and a smile so innocent, IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL thing in this world, because it reminds me constantly of Lord Krishna in his childhood.
A child is his mother's delight, his father's pride, his grandfather's company, his grandmother's treasure, his sisters' annoyance and his brothers' tolerance. Such a magical child is loved by all and protected by God.
Children have tremendous energy both of mind and body. If you do not put them on the right course with your confidence, care and affection, they might go astray.
Parents should be vigilant to read children's thoughts and to guide and direct their energy so that they may render service to the glory of God, to their country and serve to achieve happiness for all of humanity.
Think not what your father was but what your son would be. He will become what your character will convey.
Do not use vulgar words. Do not steal anything. Do not hurt any body. Do not waste time. Do not talk too much. Do not play too much. Do not keep bad company. Do not miss classes. Do not ever tell a lie. Do not ever show off. Be moderate, observe cleanliness, be good and do good, speak gently, speak sweetly. Speak the truth. Pray to God every day. Respect parents, teachers and elders. Be kind to all. Serve all and love all. Study more and play less. Talk less and learn more. Take less and give more. SPEAK less and ACT more. Complain less and laugh more. Be bold, be clear, have faith in yourself, in your objective, in your ability, in God and in hard work.
The purpose of education should be educative and not merely informative. It should teach how to think clearly, how to act wisely, how to love sincerely and how to trust mutually.
Education teaches learning things and good education teaches practicing things. When your educations reflects through your behaviour, you attain wisdom.
The purpose of true education is to create the right sense of values: the value of time, the value of discipline, the value of character, the value of prayer, the value of hard work the value of responsibility, the value of teachers and the value of parents and elders.
One Truth, Many Faiths
All religions bring peace, comfort, love, courage, charity, serenity, purity, humility and happiness.
The essence of religion is felt in divine change of attitude in you, in peace, in brotherhood, in unity, in sacrificing and in universal love.
Life, Death and the Eternal
The fabric of life we weave with our daily Karma. What we reap in the field of this world is the crop which we have sown.
God never punishes any bad action; it is only the result of such an action which becomes punishment.
Review of life at the end of your journey should be a store of contentment and peace and not a series of regrets, griefs and guilts.
Nothing belongs to you except the right to work; then why do you cherish insatiable desires which are mere illusions?
A heart full of mercy, compassion and kindness for the poor, is the holiest place SAI lives in it.
Prayer without devotion, work without worship, love without longing and life without faith are like flowers without fragrance.
Praise inflates ego, criticism increases wisdom, desire increases grief and prayer begets confidence.
No work is small or big; it is your thinking which makes it so; therefore put your heart in whatever you do and leave the result to God.
Sai will only help when you will help yourselves. Your actions should be louder than your words and your thoughts should be higher than your actions. So think of SAI Prema, the DIVINE Light of our thoughts.
Kindness is the poetry of the heart, forgiveness is the music of the mind, DO-GOOD-AND-FORGET is the golden chain which binds humanity together.
