The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Aparokṣānubhūtiḥ

Verse 6

सदैव वासनात्यागः शमोऽयमिति शब्दितः ।निग्रहो बाह्यवृत्तीनां दम इत्यभिधीयते ॥ ६ ॥

In plain words

Letting go of your stored-up tendencies, and letting go of them always, with no gaps: that is what the word śama means. Holding back the outward reach of the senses: that is what gets called dama.

Close to the Sanskrit

The giving up of latent impressions, always — this is called śama. The restraint of the external functions is named dama.
